Lund – 10.oktober 2016

Hej konstfoto-vän

Konstkvällen i Lund 15 oktober

“Salång PåGång” – “Goings On” – in my home studio on Cultural Night 2016

Or “Salång PåGång” in Swedish is what I always do at the Cultural Night in Lund, every year on the third Saturday of September.

That’s the day and night of the year when all the inhabitants are on their feet to consume cultural events – and culture is defined extremely broadly, including for all ages, all nationalities and all cultural expressions such as eating…

Since I have to take care of my visitors to my studio, I have not experienced the incredible diversity people tell me about – but I remember it faintly from before I opened my studio space in 2009. It was so exciting – dance, poetry, art, music, performances, happenings, you name it!

Salon “Goings On” literally means that I show what I am working on these days; that evening I have no theme-based exhibition but all kinds of works on the walls, including unfinished ones, experiments, big and small prints, test prints and – well, whatever I am working on these weeks and months.

It’s a peep into my studio and working methods with a lot of “A.P.” – Artist’s Proofs, testprints rather than final limited editions.

Abstract

This year my visitors will see a couple of A1-sized prints (roughly 90 x 60 cm) – I print everything myself and this is the largest I can do on my printer – of my abstract works; the size means that the incredibly small details will be more visible than the smaller prints I have had on display earlier.

I’ve written about abstract photography here and there is a video from the exhibition “Abstract Real” here.

The Photo Festival in Landskrona, Sweden

Landskrona – a town of 30,000 inhabitants situated at the south-eastern coast of Sweden – has a vision:

“To become the home of photography in Scandinavia with a history museum and research facilities in co-operation with Lund University (a 30 min train ride south of it); it will arrange unique exhibitions of contemporary photography as well as the largest photo festival in Sweden.”

One wonders whether Landskrona’s cultural pioneers have been inspired by Marrakech in Morocco that has about the same vision?

The Citadel in Landskrona – photos being on display around and inside it
The Landskrona Photo Festival 2016 ran from August 19 to 28 – and if you couldn’t go there, there is both a fine website and an app.

It’s a remarkable and very welcome initiative of a rather small town; it proves that size is not of importance. It’s the vision and the investment and the synergy among enthusiasts that drive it all – something my town Lund, 4 times bigger, has no sense of.

This Festival is neither Photo London nor Photo Basel in terms of sophistication or quality. It is not a fair where works are sold. It’s very different – it’s about passion and giving various buildings, parks and even a citadel a new life, a new function. It’s about Landskrona’s vision that may lead to comerce, of course, but is not driven by a commercial motive. But there is all reason to believe that Landskrona will soon be on the international art photography map for real.

And it’s pleasantly down-to-earth and filled with talents from rather many corners of the world. A day pass is US $ 12 and the exhibitions take place in the Museum, the Japan-inspired Art Hall, at majestic Citadel, in parks, squares and local gallery spaces – all within some 600-800 metres of walk.

Landskrona is definitely what you’d call charming. The environment in which the exhibitions take place is a great asset that the Festival people exploit to its limit.

I usually start out these blog articles by stating that I am not an art critic but an art recommender. It means that I choose to tell my readers what I like, convey positive energy, inspire other photographers/artists and art lovers and make them want to go and see what I’ve seen. And – of course – what I mention below is only a selection of the places, artists and impressions.

Konsthallen – the Town Art Hall – hosted two young female artists allegedly dialoguing with each other, Elina Brotherus and Dorothée Smith. The text on this link offers an explanation and background but I just did not quite feel that dialogue – except for the identity dimension. In my view, Smith is by far the most interesting of the two; Brotherus somehow too self-focused for my taste. Brilliant photography for sure, but just did not speak to me.

Smith’s so-called Spectographie seemed abstract, intriguing and more explorative of the bigger world out there than Brotherus’ images in which, with few exceptions, she herself is the central object/subject.

New exhibition – “People Of Islam”

Poster-PeopleOfIslam_PhSh

Welcome to my new exhibition

“People Of Islam”
Selected images from Iran, Iraq, Marrakech and Somaliland

April 3-6, 2015 – Easter – Every day 10-18 – after that by appointment only.

About the exhibition
People and milieus from Islam which the Western world is in constant conflict with.

I did fact-finding in Iraq 2002 and 2003 and already before the war, the Iraqis were hard hit by the inhuman sanctions.

Since 2012 I work every year in Iran with peace and photography. Somaliland I visited in 2014 (and 1977-81) – and the images from Marrakech, Morocco, are just two months old. The man above is Barber Lahcen in Marrakech and here are some thoughts on taking photos in that amazing city – with pictures.

It’s pictures of suffering but also of beauty and diversity. I want to show – and am happy to also talk about – the fact that there are many other images of this culture than the one you get in the mainstream Western media.

It’s my little contribution, as peace researcher and photographer – to building bridges. Because we simply must!

Practical info
1. Takes place parallel to “Konstrundan” but I am not a member of it. Open April 3-6 all days 10-18.
2. If you have not visited me before: The exhibition is in my studio, a modest space, and there will be about 40 images in formats from A3+ to A1.
3. If you can’t make it April 3-6 you can set up an appointment any time on:
obergphotographics@gmail.com or +46 738 525200.

4. And if you are far from Sweden: most of the images will soon be on my photo homepage (see below).

Hope very much to welcome you soon !

Shooting images in Marrakech, Morocco

What an exciting place! Eldorado for photographers and lovers of art, history, colours, mild and hospitable people – and lots of features of Islamic culture and art.

Marrakech – there are so many “must see” places and even more milieus to explore on your own, without a guidebook. There are new sights, surprises and motives around virtually every corner – a day with a camera is intensive indeed.

And of course you should stay inside the old town, in the Medina where alleys are so narrow that only a donkey cart (and some very noisy mopeds) can get through. It’s labyrinthine and you’ll love it when you get lost.

The light is fabulous here; there are no end to Continue reading Shooting images in Marrakech, Morocco
