Making it to the Venice Biennale. Or, almost so…

In late autumn 2016 I was approached by the Dutch Global Art Affairs – GAA – Foundation about which you may read here.

Large art and architecture exhibitions are organised every year during the Venice Biennale period hosted and supported by the European Cultural Centre.

Like numerous other exhibitions all over Venice in that period, the GAA exhibitions are listed as part of the Biennale program.

As you’ll see here, their exhibitions can be found in two palaces – Mora and Bembo in the heart of Venice.

It goes without saying that I was very excited about this contact. It wasn’t an invitation per se but we had a long exploratory Skype talk and the GAA people were planning to integrate photography more than before in their exhibitions, they evidently thought my globally-oriented – photography was relevant and took serious interest in the fact that I was also a peace and conflict researcher with pictures from places like Burundi, Iran and Syria.

We discussed various more or less lofty ideas and recognised that time was actually quite short for me to come up with something original, produce it and mount it all in frames and transport it to Venice for the 13th of May opening.

The photo above is a digital gift – a moment of joy or reflection – to you from Oberg PhotoGraphics.

A special welcome to many new subscribers and social media and other friends – here is the preceding shoot.

shoot aims to stimulate art curiosity and share positive stuff. It’s a gateway to the online “flip” GlobalArt Magazine, the blog I write as an art recommender, not art critic.

shoot wings into your mailbox now and then. Sometimes I also shoot just a single image your way – exclusively for shoot recipients.

I believe in global networking, sharing and in positive energy. Please share with me if you have news and views.

“Salång PåGång” – “Goings On” – in my home studio on Cultural Night 2016

Or “Salång PåGång” in Swedish is what I always do at the Cultural Night in Lund, every year on the third Saturday of September.

That’s the day and night of the year when all the inhabitants are on their feet to consume cultural events – and culture is defined extremely broadly, including for all ages, all nationalities and all cultural expressions such as eating…

Since I have to take care of my visitors to my studio, I have not experienced the incredible diversity people tell me about – but I remember it faintly from before I opened my studio space in 2009. It was so exciting – dance, poetry, art, music, performances, happenings, you name it!

Salon “Goings On” literally means that I show what I am working on these days; that evening I have no theme-based exhibition but all kinds of works on the walls, including unfinished ones, experiments, big and small prints, test prints and – well, whatever I am working on these weeks and months.

It’s a peep into my studio and working methods with a lot of “A.P.” – Artist’s Proofs, testprints rather than final limited editions.

Abstract

This year my visitors will see a couple of A1-sized prints (roughly 90 x 60 cm) – I print everything myself and this is the largest I can do on my printer – of my abstract works; the size means that the incredibly small details will be more visible than the smaller prints I have had on display earlier.

Dear art photography friend

Shall Venice die?

It’s been known for quite some time that Venice in Italy is sinking and being destroyed also by over-tourism: 20 million per year in a city of 56,000 inhabitants whose number has fallen dramatically the last few years.

Many of you may have visited Venezia. Can you imagine it dead? I can’t, but it is a realistic scenario and I’ve written a bit about this tragedy on my art blog inspired by art historian Salvatore Settis’ recent wake-up call in the International New York Times and his new book, If Venice Dies.

I forward modest ideas about what can perhaps be done to stop this slow death, world attention to it being one.

But where is the EU in this? Where is the world beyond the market and profit-making? Venice is about a world heritage, not just Venice or Europe.

The photo above is from that unique city, shot at the best time of the year there, in early January when there are almost no tourists.
