Hi friend

Welcome to shoot # 34
– a digital photo gift from Oberg Photographics – a moment of meditation with which I wish you a good weekend and “weekbegin.”

Sean Scully, The Biennale, Venice and Iran
The photo above is “Sean Scully at Palazzo Falier” in Venice. It’s taken within the 15 min in the afternoon when the sun sets between the buildings along Canal Grande in such a way that it illuminates – magically – Sean Scully’s powerful oil painting. The shapes of the door and the radiator correspond with the rectangular fields in his work.

You may read a little overview of this year’s Biennale on my photo and other art blog. Iran’s pavilion, far away near the Jewish ghetto, stood out for its theme, quality, diversity, its inclusive regionalised idea and for the old factory environment. More about it later. And did you know that Iran holds an incredible collection of contemporary Western art – well preserved although being controversial?

Is there a more lasting gift than a unique photo in a limited edition, signed and numbered and with print documentation? I do the entire shoot-to-print process myself and the works are only sold by me. That’s your guarantee of both quality and cheapest price. Be inspired at my homepage (also with new editions), write or call me and I shall be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Hi friend

Welcome to shoot # 33
– a digital photo gift from Oberg Photographics – a moment of meditation with which I wish you a good weekend and “weekbegin.”

Thousands have been standing where the picture above is taken – fascinated by the atmosphere close to St. Marco Square and with the St. Giorgio Church in the distance. But few may have taken it with this sense of water, clouds and air inside the image – ephemeral as Venice is.

I’m exploring the Biennale – a world art event in its last week – called “All The World’s Futures”. My preliminary thoughts here will be elaborated shortly. In my view, this Biennale wasn’t as inspiring as earlier years. It is more about the national past than the global future.

It may – may – indicate the relative decline of Western art. The pavilions and artists from Iran, China, Japan, South Korea etc. being way more interesting than, say, the UK, Denmark, France, Holland, etc.

The Biennale 2015 # 1: Giardini and Arsenale

Amazing, warm, enigmatic, beautiful and full of symbolism – the boats and the thousands of keys hanging in millions of red threads. There you go: Shiharo Shiota ‘”Key In The Hand” at the Japanese pavilion – one of the best pieces at the 2015 Venezia Biennale!

I’ve been to all the Biennales since 2007. My admittedly very subjective view – and what else could it be? – is that this year’s is far from the best. It’s overarching title is “All The World’s Futures” and it has three filters – 1) Garden of Disorder; 2) Liveness: On Epic Duration and 3) Reading Capital.” It is curated by Okwui Enwezor, Nigeria.

A very long art work at Arsenale

A very long art work at Arsenale – having to do with world trade in cocoa – stamped “Ghana Cocoa Board” – and slavery?

It takes place at three places in Venice – the Giardini space (29 pavilions), the Arsenale space (31 national pavilions plus lots of single artists) and all over town in the so-called Collateral Events accepted by the curator.

This year it has a record 89 participating countries and over 150 artists. Many see the bi-annual Venice Art Biennale – now in its 56th year as the world art event.

Fiona Hall: Wrong Way Time, the inaugural exhibition in the new Australian Pavilion, attracted 287,690 visitors

Fiona Hall: Wrong Way Time, the inaugural exhibition in the new Australian Pavilion, attracted 287,690 visitors – a very inventive idea – politically and aesthetically executed. Full of engaging objects and ideas, making you think…and wonder… and feel enriched.

And of course it is fascinating. Its diversity is completely impossible to convey to anyone who has not been there. It’s  been going on from May 9-November 22, 2015 – and I am here in Venice the last 7 days – to explore and learn as much as I possibly can and with pleasantly few visitors in Venice.

I write this first of two articles midways, Continue reading

Hi friend

Welcome to shoot # 31
– a digital photo gift from Oberg Photographics – a moment of meditation with which I wish you a good weekend and “weekbegin.”

The evocative streetphoto above is one out of some fifty I shot standing there for some time. I selected this one because of the bicyclist’s balancing act, the combination of colours and the reflections of the red traffic lights along the entire wall.

Sure, photography is about light. But it’s also about space/place and time(ing), about getting that special one-time combination and composition.

It’s the time of the year when we look for gifts

This coming week I’ shall be in Belgrade, Serbia and Timisoara, Romania. It could be that something comes out of that photographically.
